The Singlepeed European Championship comes to the Novar Estate, Evanton on the last weekend of May 2017. Prepare yourself for a weekend of shenanigans, bike snobbery and competition. It is a not-for-profit project being run by volunteers and any surplus will go to the Highland Hospice, a very worthy local charity.
For those not familiar with the format it is a weekend event: there will be guided rides, led by local riders; there will be an event HQ created in the middle of the forest; there will be beer from Cromarty Brewery and food from The Storehouse of Fowlis. There will be other things happening which are still in the planning stage: a whisky and posh gin bar; a significant local rock band for the post race party; the local Events Committee has suggested a Ceilidh in the Village Hall; we are also hopefully lining up a couple of speakers.
Various accommodations from wild camping to castles are offered on the Facebook page and website. For information on wild camping see (http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/Practical-guide/public/camping). This will be quite limited in the immediate area of the event. The Novar Estate has very generously gifted us the use of the base area and trails for the weekend and we are aiming to leave it as we found it, save a load of tyre marks.
For your full race entry you’ll pay your share of the all the central costs (HQ/insurances/licences/entertainment), race entry, a swag bag, a t-shirt and a post race meal. If you are attending but not racing you get all the above, minus the race entry, swag bag and t-shirt. If you are a child accompanying a racer there is no charge but a contribution towards some of these costs would be appreciated. We are working to maximise the benefits you get for attending.
A few have asked about the race itself. The course itself is a secret and we’ll be trying to keep it that way. It will take place on the Saturday late morning and include very strenuous, mainly firetrack climbs and tight, technical singletrack descents following deer tracks. It will take the fastest, most skilled riders a couple of hours and many will choose not to finish all laps. Usual rules will apply - it’s an all-in race with a mens and womens section. Some riders will be in fancy dress. There will be a Le Mans start and we will hide your bike. There may be a play-off for the leading riders.
Welcome to all and see you soon.
