Making Time

One in a series of peer support + creative workshops hosted by Making Time and invited artists, for anyone who is (or may be) neurodivergent

Stimming is a practice of repetitive movements, behaviours, and/or vocalisations to self-soothe, regulate, or stimulate to bring oneself into balance. We all stim, but for neurodivergent people who process the senses differently, stimming is particularly important for wellbeing.Stimprovisation is a practice of sensory-seeking improvisation, discovered and coined by Aby during her doctoral research. Developed as a somatic practice for neurodivergent people, Stimprovisation acts to liberate neurodivergent embodiments through a choreographic practice of ‘unmasking’.In this playful workshop, neuroqueer choreographer Aby Watson shares her process of stimprovisation: sensory-seeking improvisation through practices of movement (stimdance), object (stimplements), and voice (sensinging), directed by the sensorial curiosity of the bodymind.This workshop offers a practical introduction to stimprovising - you do not need performance experience to join us, only a willingness to play and explore!The session will be held on Zoom. We will email you a link to join plus more detailed information ahead of the event. The workshop will last two hours with a comfort break in the middle. Credit: Rudy Carlier -Aby Watson is a neuroqueer artist, performer, choreographer and activist. She is proudly dyslexic, dyspraxic, autistic and has ADHD. She has been part of Making Time for 2 years. She is the 2024 Bruce Millar Graduate Fellow and founding director of the Scottish ND Performance Network.Making Time is run by Grace Denton and Jo Hauge, it is a series of online events for neurodivergent artists, writers or researchers. If you/your work falls slightly outside of these parameters but you feel like it’s for you, then it’s for you! You also do not have to have a diagnosis to join, and while talking about diagnostic processes and different neurodivergent traits is totally welcome, there’s no expectation that you’ll share any of those details with the group.Making Time sessions usually run on Monday mornings, but this series of workshops aims to expand them out into the evenings to enable more/different people to join. We invited some members of our community, plus some other neurodivergent artists we admire, to lead these on whatever topic they wish.We have a website coming soon.
