Stop the Silvertown Tunnel - Health Summit
Date and time
HEALTH SUMMIT to explore the potential ill effects on air quality, and on local people’s health, of the proposed Silvertown Tunnel scheme
About this event
All welcome, in person or on line.
■ Discussions to be opened by Dr Ian Mudway (School of Public Health, Imperial College), John Whitelegg (Professor of Sustainable Transport, Liverpool John Moores University), Rokhsana Fiaz (Mayor of Newham), local health practitioners and campaigners
■ We will appeal urgently to the Mayor of London to pause and review the Silvertown tunnel project, and to produce a Health Impact Assessment on it, taking into account the following:
□ The Silvertown Tunnel threatens to add up to 30% more cars, vans and HGVs on the A12/A13/A102/A2 corridor, producing massive increases in pollution and carbon emissions.
□ Transport for London has never done any pollution analysis or health analysis for this scenario, which would disproportionately impact low-income families and black, Asian and other ethnic minorities, and all children living in the area.
□ This project would add to the dire situation with air pollution in east and south-east London. It would also make it impossible for London to meet its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, and add to the health problems caused globally by climate change.
□ Transport for London claims future London Mayors will toll both the Blackwall and Silvertown Tunnels to keep traffic levels down – but they are not legally obliged to, and in any case the tolls might not be effective.
■ The summit is organised by the Stop the Silvertown Tunnel Coalition, and supported by Newham branch of the National Education Union "Our Children Need Clean Air" campaign
