The Strength Coach Roundtable Returns!

Featuring coaches:

Will Ruth, Blake Gourley, & Joe Deleo

Last time, the Roundtable discussed a wide range of topics from warmups, injury prevention, nutrition, hydration, and recovery. In following episodes, we will dive into 1-2 topics at greater detail.

This month, we'll discuss strength training for performance

Will Ruth is the strength coach for the Western Washington University men’s club team and the author of Rowperfect’s bestselling e-book, “Rowing Stronger: Strength Training to Maximize Rowing Performance.” A former high school rower, Will graduated from Western with a degree in kinesiology (exercise science), focus in sport psychology. He is an NSCA-Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, USA-Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach, is currently pursuing US Rowing Level 2 certification. You can find Will’s work online at his website,, for articles, videos, and interview content for rowers, lacrosse players, and coaches. Will also coaches high school lacrosse and competes in the sport of Strongman.

Blake Gourley brings over a decade of rowing experience to the table. He spent 4 years rowing for the Los Gatos Rowing Club where he was team captain and the fastest rower on the team in 2004. In 2004, Blake was recruited to row for Cal’s undefeated freshman crew. An injury at Cal sidelined his rowing career, but led to his passion for injury reduction in the sport of rowing. Over the course of his coaching career his teams have consistently placed in the top 5 at state championships. Blake is a Certified Personal Trainer, Performance Enhancement Specialist, and Corrective Exercise Specialist through The National Academy of Sports Medicine. He is also a Functional Movement Screen Expert, Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Speciality, and Certified Functional Strength Coach. Blake continues to further his expertise with internships at locations such as Stanford Sports Performance, and Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning (voted the #1 gym in the USA). 

Blake is currently the Performance Director at the Los Gatos Rowing Club, Co-owner of Movement Evolution Performance Training, the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Santa Clara Men's Crew Team, and a board member for the Sports Medicine Certificate at West Valley College.

Joe DeLeo is a former collegiate rower turned strength coach. His practice focuses on working with endurance athletes such as rowers, runners, and triathletes to get stronger so they can perform their best. He also has tremendous experience rehabbing rowing-related injuries and stresses. He uses three modalities to train his athletes and clients: bodyweight, kettlebells, and indian clubs. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He holds certifications as a Functional Movement Specialist, Rocktape FMT II, and is a Level I Girya with StrongFirst. He lives in Providence, RI, where he can be found both off and on the water helping his athletes get stronger, move better, and race faster! You can read his blog posts at:
