To mark the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan House London offers a special screening of the documentary film Stronger Than the Wave.

Produced in 2024, Stronger Than the Wave captures the rich coastal landscapes of the Tōhoku region while vividly illustrating how the Michinoku Coastal Trail was developed in the aftermath of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Through interviews with those involved in building the Trail and local residents, the documentary reveals how the walking route has come to connect communities across the region, forming a nuanced picture of loss, fortitude and reconciliation during the recovery and reconstruction process.

The event also features an introduction by the director Robbie McKane.

About the Michinoku Coastal Trail

The Michinoku Coastal Trail is a long-distance walking trail designated by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment to support recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, which occurred on 11 March 2011.

This trail allows travellers to enjoy walks along an historic 1,000-kilometre path, mainly through the Pacific coastal region of northeastern Japan, stretching from Kabushima in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, to Matsukawaura in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, while taking in the beautiful coastal landscapes of the Tōhoku region.

It was designed as a space for remembrance, recovery, and renewed connection between people and place.

About the Director

Robbie McKane is a filmmaker with a background in fine art and factual television. His work explores the relationship between artisans and their living environment, revealing connective stories between craftsmanship, ritual, and the natural world. His previous films include The House of Ron Hitchins (2021) and LUX, When Light Began to Breathe (2022).

Stronger than the Wave is Robbie’s first feature-length work, inspired by journalist James Clark’s writing on the Michinoku Coastal Trail from 2019. James is a producer on the project, alongside Aizawa Kumi from the Michinoku Trail Club, an organization that helps to maintain and promote the trail in cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment and local governments.

The screenings are in English and Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 89 mins

Guests who are booked to attend the screening can also enjoy 10% off drinks at the Stand on their way in.

*Please note that filming and / or photography may take place at this event. Photos and footage of the event may then be used to promote Japan House London, helping more people to discover what we offer. If you have any concerns, please contact us online or contact a member of the team on site.
