Study Day: Patchwork & Quilting

By Gawthorpe Textiles Collection

Overview

A study day where you will have the opportunity to view highlights from the patchwork and quilting in the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection.

In this day long study session you'll get the opportinity to study some of the star items in our collection of patchwork and quilting. We'll look at examples of a range of techniques including applique, paper piecing, log cabin, and crazy patchwork as well as some beautiful examples of hand quilting. There will be items from the late 18th century right through to the 20th century.

Our Curator will talk you through each item; discussing the techniques and fabrics that have been used to create them and pointing out interesting details for you to view up close.

This study day is a rare chance to see some of these items which due to their large size are rarely on display and are usually only available to view during private group or research bookings. So if you are interested in patchwork, quilting, historic textiles or surface pattern design this is an opportunity not to be missed!

On the Day
Please make sure to arrive between 9.45am and 9.55am for a prompt 10am start.

One of our team will meet you at Reception, in the building just next to Brierfield Railway Station, and will direct you through to our Studio where the workshop will take place.

Please note that the reception will only be staffed from 9:45 onwards, so if you arrive before this you will not be able to enter early. If you arrive early there is an onsite coffee shop where you may wish to relax and purchase refreshments.

Refreshments
A selection of hot and cold drinks will be available for you to have during breaks and are included in the price of the workshop.

You are welcome to bring your own packed lunch, which can be eaten in The Hub during the lunch break. There is a vending machine there for an additional snack or two. Alternatively there is also an onsite coffee shop Black Sheep Coffee which sells a range of drinks, sandwiches and snacks.
