Study Visit - Innovations in 19th Century Textiles

This in-person study day will take you on a journey through the textiles of the 19th century - a period when amazing innovations in technology and science shaped the way textiles were designed and made. We will be studying examples of textiles produced using some of these new developments from roller printing and jacqaurd weaving to aniline dyeing and machine laces. We will also compare these to examples of the more traditional versions of these techniques to see how successfully they could imitate them.

Using original antique textiles from our collection, we will give you the chance to get up close to the items so you can enjoy and appreciate every detail. The study visit will be guided by our Curator who will talk you though the items, pointing out design and construction details not to be missed and answering questions throughout the day.

This is a fantastic opportunity to spend time with some textiles that are not normally on display, learn something new and meet other people who share an interest in antique textiles and crafts.

On the Day
Please make sure to arrive between 9.45am and 9.55am for a prompt 10am start.
