This screening has been selected and organised byAlexandraSymons Sutcliffe. It is part of the project 'A Partition', curated by Rebecca Lewin. This project consists of a solo exhibition by Josh Bitelli at Cell Project Space and a program of events at The Old Operating Theatre. The two locations of this project have been chosen as contrasting forms of institution, sites that respond to the relationship between the individual and the collective, or social, body. The possibility of the artist becoming a partition - a focal point that reveals and unpicks the transactional exchanges that surround their practice - will be explored throughout this series of events.

'Substitutes', selected by Alexandra Symons Sutcliffe, brings together a constellation of film, animation and oral performance which describe the technological production of the human body. These diverse and varying works deal with prosthesis, amputation, discipline and  corporeal education. They are self-consciously concerned with the transmission of form and the creation of a body specific to their media and machinery. This program places Stan Brakhage's 1970s seminal experiments in celluloid next to a section of a 1980s educational video and contrasts them with Emil Cohl's early animation and Ben Watson's recent recording of Stuart Calton's poem **Blepharospasms.** In this constellation there is no single natural form but fragments of different versions of the mediated human, none more true than any other.
