In SUBTEXT, Paul Camo and James Jordan Johnson will collaborate through the format of live sound performances. Utilising forms of sampling, live instrumentation and found text in order to create new, either legible or illegible, relationships between various genres and thematics by using four CDJ’s.
About the Artists: Paul Camo and James Jordan Johnson
Once a regular DJ at the legendary Plastic People, Paul Camo has hosted a flagship show on NTS Radio since 2012. He has also curated the music for the Turner Prize opening event at Turner Contemporary, NTS X Tate Late, Somerset House, Ashmolean Museum and djed for Touching bass, We Out Here Festival and for Jumbi at Gala Festival. Paul also performed in the Tom Skinner band at Church of Sound. Paul has curated selections for clothes designer Nicholas Daley and Goodhood.
He is also the Creative Director of Studio Camo, and the founder of Margate Radio, which has been running for 6 years. In that time the station has grown to more than 90 shows, broadcasting a wonderfully varied range of content from Margate/ Thanet locals.’
James Jordan Johnson is an artist and also thinks through musique concrete within DJ’ing.His work as been shown at Mosaic Rooms, Tate Britain, 180 the Strand, London Performance Studios, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, ICA London, Humber Street Gallery and Arts Admin. He is currently an artist in residence at FormaHQ.
This activation is part of Movements from the Margins: Collective Altar, a week-long residency at Quench Gallery exploring ritual, sound, diasporic lineage and transformative shared experience. The programme gathers Global Majority artists, healers and practitioners drawn to the mythos of Margate’s coastline, a place where chalk, salt, water and fire shape new forms of becoming.
Through practices of listening, story, ritual and sonic transmission, Collective Altar centres ephemerality, intuition and the healing legacy of art across past, present and future.

This event is open to all. The Collective Altar residency is rooted in Global Majority experiences and practices, but this session welcomes anyone interested in sound, grounding, embodiment or creative exploration. No prior experience required.
This event is free but places are limited so please book and If you can no longer attend, please release your ticket as soon as possible so the space may be offered to another community member.
