This awareness session, led by West Central London Mind, is part of a project funded by NHS England, aimed at reducing rates of suicide in high-risk groups. It is tailored for staff and volunteers who want to gain an understanding in topics related to suicide in order to contribute meaningfully to suicide prevention efforts, and promote mental health awareness.
The session will focus on language to use around suicide, debunking myths, who might be at risk and how someone might show they are struggling, asking about suicide directly, listening and empathetically exploring how someone feels, and signposting. There will be time for questions at the end.
Please note that this is an awareness session rather than a training session. It will take place online on Microsoft Teams.
This session aims to:
- Increase participants' understanding of suicide by debunking myths.
- Provide guidance around the language to use when talking about suicide.
- Increase attendees' confidence with supporting someone who may be suicidal, including knowing how to ask directly about suicide and signpost to support.
Facilitators:
The session will be led by two experienced facilitators, Elfie Lyon and Steven Gill, from West Central London Mind.
