Three Sunderland alumni based in Canada, Hong Kong and Australia will come together at this event and will talk about their careers in Pharm

About this event

As part of the University of Sunderland Pharmacy Centenary celebrations we are hosting this online event in which we are bringing together three successful Sunderland alumni representing different aspects of pharmacy from around the world.

Hear from:

  • Kam Mo Lam, MPharm 2006, based in Hong Kong.

Kam Mo works as Clinical Pharmacist (Oncology) at the Hospital Authority, Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong. Kam Mo began his career as a community pharmacist at Boots the Chemist in the UK.

He then moved onto hospital clinical pharmacy at South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust. He later became an oncology senior pharmacist at The Dudley Group of Hospitals, NHS Foundation Trust.

In 2011, missing his family, Kam Mo returned to Hong Kong to continue his career in his homeland, joining the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. Kam Mo’s areas of interest are clinical pharmacy oncology service on solid tumors, sarcomas, palliative care and pharmacy aseptic dispensing.

  • Dr Matthew Crum, MPharm 2010, based in Melbourne, Australia.

Matt works at Pfizer as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) in the Rare Disease portfolio. After graduating, Matt undertook a split pre-registration placement between AstraZeneca and the University Hospital of South Manchester. The pre-clinical formulation projects at AZ inspired a career in pharmaceutical science. Matt relocated to Melbourne, Australia to undertake a PhD in Drug Delivery, Pharmaceutics at Monash University.

Matt was then offered a role on the Pfizer Research & Development two-year graduate programme, which included diverse and challenging cross-functional assignments across the drug development lifecycle at the Pfizer manufacturing site in Melbourne. He then progressed to his current role.

  • Mena Guirguis, MPharm 2016, based in Ontario, Canada.

Mena is the co-owner of three community pharmacies in Northern Ontario (Canada). He got a business opportunity and became co-owner with his wife Nardin (who is also a Sunderland graduate) in 2018, just under two years after he graduated.

After an extensive research of the job market, Mena decided to set up their pharmacies in the island of Manitoulin, an area that was underserved and where the need for pharmacists is great. Life is very busy for Mena and Nardin, as the the couple and two other pharmacists/co-owners cover off all the shifts involved with operating three stores in three far-flung communities.

The three graduates will give a short pitch about their careers and how they ended up in their present role. Then we will host a live Q&A session.

This event will provide a great opportunity to compare and contrast countries/careers and no doubt provide inspiration to students and other graduates.

Organiser Development and Alumni Office

Organiser of Sunderland Global Pharmacists Network

The Alumni Association is managed by the Development & Alumni Office and was re-launched in 2013 to support greater alumni engagement.

Our key aims are to:

  • Increase alumni participation significantly across the University
  • Improve our knowledge on alumni career paths and build greater opportunity for students and recently graduated alumni
  • Re-establish contact with alumni whom we have lost contact with in recent years
  • Develop and increase support for current students and graduates up to ten years out of University

We encourage you to engage through our global network, come back and visit us in Sunderland for a reunion, become one of our ‘Super Alumni’, help in our recruitment activities and join us at one of our upcoming events.
