About this event

Would you like to learn how to sketch in the open air from a professional artist?

Join me, James Murch, for a unique sketching experience in the beautiful surroundings of Cockington Court. As a semi-finalist in Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, the current Artist in Residence at Torre Abbey, and a former Resident Artist and now tenant at Cockington Court, I’ll share my techniques and insights from years of open air painting in this inspiring location.

What You’ll Receive and Learn:
At the meeting point, you’ll receive a starter sketch kit, including a notepad, pencil, viewfinder, and eraser. I’ll guide you through using the kit, sharing expert tips to help you capture the beauty of your surroundings. Together, we’ll explore techniques like squinting and using the viewfinder to simplify your view and focus on the essential details of the landscape.

What to Expect:
We’ll stop at various scenic points along the route, exploring light and shade—the building blocks of great sketches. You’ll practice capturing the natural beauty around you in the plein air tradition followed by generations of landscape artists.

By the end of the tour, you might just discover your inner Van Gogh!

1. Can I bring my dog to the event?

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed at this event to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants.

How challenging is the walk?

The walk is fairly easy and suitable for most fitness levels. While the terrain includes some uneven paths, the pace is relaxed, with frequent stops for sketching.

What should I wear?

Please wear sturdy walking boots to ensure your comfort and safety during the walk. Dress appropriately for the weather and consider bringing a lightweight jacket if needed.

What time does the walk start?

The walk begins promptly at 5:00 PM. Please arrive 10–15 minutes early to check in and collect your sketching kit.

Where is the meeting point?

The meeting point is in the centre of Cockington Village, under the archway at the bottom of Vicarage Hill TQ2 6XA

Is parking available?

Yes, parking is available in a pay-and-display car park next to the Visitor Centre. Please ensure you have change or a card for the parking meters.

Will sketching materials be provided?

Yes, a sketch kit will be supplied for all participants. You do not need to bring your own materials.

Can I bring children to the event?

This event is for adults only

What happens if it rains?

The event will proceed unless the weather is severe. In case of cancellation, we will notify you via email or phone with further details or rescheduling options.
