Research Excellence Series Talks 2026

About the talkWe are pleased to welcome Professor Stephen Jivraj from the Centre for Longitudinal Study Information and User Support (CeLSIUS) Team, University College London and Office for National Statistics (ONS). The CeLSIUS team were winners of last year’s ONS Research Excellence Award - Secure Data Creation Award. Stephen will be joined by Adam Tempest from the ONS Longitudinal Study Development team. The CeLSIUS team were winners of last year’s ONS Research Excellence Award - Secure Data Creation Award.CeLSIUS supports academic, voluntary and public sector researchers to use the ONS Longitudinal Study (LS) in England and Wales. The ONS Longitudinal Study (ONS-LS) is a longitudinal dataset that contains census and life events data linked between six successive censuses beginning in 1971 and updated at the 1981, 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Censuses.This talk will describe the ONS-LS, the CeLSIUS support service, and examples of research using the 2021 linked data.This presentation aligns with our February research theme: Housing &amp; Communities.Meet the presenterProfessor Stephen Jivraj, Professor of Quantitative Social Science at the University College London (UCL), Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care and is director of the Economic and Social Research Council funded Centre for Longitudinal Study Information and User Support (CeLSIUS).His research focuses on understanding health and wellbeing in later life, the impact of socioeconomic and ethnic inequalities, and how neighbourhood environments shape life course outcomes.Adam Tempest, ONS Longitudinal Study Development team. Adam is a Senior Social Researcher with extensive experience using multiple statistical languages in the analysis of large administrative and census data.Learn more about the Research Excellence SeriesEach year, the ONS hosts a collection of online events showcasing outstanding work from across the research community. The series celebrates projects that use secure data to generate new insights and drive impact, as well as innovative organisational initiatives that strengthen research capability and collaboration.The 2026 series will take audiences on the full journey of these projects, from inception and methodology, through to dissemination and impact.
