Surreal Maps - Screenings + Workshop
Join us for an event with the brilliant Surreal Maps.
For April, Majlis Film Club moves from its usual second Monday slot to Tuesday 23 April for a special collaboration with Surreal Maps, led by Heidi Sarah Affi and Shams Hanieh.
This event's programming includes two short films (including Nation Estate by Larissa Sansour), a lecture, an activity, and lots of discussion. Together, we will explore dream geographies, emotional maps, cartographic alternatives, antifutures, and more. The selected films engage with surreal representations of geography, asking how we can represent the landscapes and futures of colonised and violated lands when conventional methods fall short. Join us for an evening of collective viewing, reflection, and discussion.
As this event includes a workshop element, capacity is limited. Please only reserve a place if you’re confident you can attend. Donations will support the future work of Surreal Maps.

18:30 - Doors Open
19.00- Intro + Screenings
20.00 - Break
20.10 - Lecture + Workshop
................
Majlis is our regular film club taking place every second Monday of the month. It’s a manifestation of our collective intention to continue our deep dive into films, expand on forms of political education and create a space where our community can gather, sit together, and converse about common issues over a shared meal or drink. The film club is open to all to attend, but will prioritise Black and non-white film workers
................
Surreal Maps is a collaborative platform dedicated to reimagining space through counter-cartographic practice. The project explores alternatives to traditional mapping, prioritising emotional and affective experiences of space, and using surreality to more truthfully represent landscapes shaped by violence. Drawing on precolonial mapping techniques, contemporary artistic responses, and collective mapping activities, Surreal Maps invites participants to interrogate dominant tools of representing land.
Other Cinemas is a project focused on the transformational power of film; whether that is showcasing the work of Black and non-white filmmakers; creating networks for Black and non-white creatives to work, learn and collaborate; or using film to document the stories of Black and non-white communities. Other Cinemas regularly hosts free film screenings in ways and spaces that serve our communities and also runs an informal film school collective of young Black and non-white filmmakers which seeks to create a real space for conversation and collaboration. Other Cinemas was set up by Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah, two filmmakers who saw the need for better ways to make and share films.

Please note that a ticket does not guarantee entry. Due to the high percentage of non-attendance for free events in London, we release more tickets than our capacity. On the very rare occasions that we exceed capacity for an event, we have to enact a first come first serve policy, so please arrive on time!
