 Sustained Ephemerality Fashion Show

Marina Ignarski is a Masters student studying Critical Creative Pratice at Southampton Solent University. She is both the event curator and designer of Sustained Ephemerality.Anglo-American designer Marina Ignarski grew up in the bustling cities of Hong Kong and London. She studied at London College of Fashion and the University of the West of England, where she earned a 2:1 degree in Fashion and Textile design. She also has a PGCE in Design and Technology. Inspired by her internship at Anna Sui in New York, Marina set up Marina Ignarski Designs in 2010 whicch she runs as a fashion and textiles business.Living on the Isle of Wight, this aprovides inspiration for organic and nature designs.

<DIV>An interdisciplinary fashion show featuring live music, fashion film and dancers to raise awareness of sustainable fashion.</DIV>

<DIV>Taking as its starting point the troubling fact that fashion is the second largest polluting industry in the world, this shows that the materials used in the fashion industry can have a negative effect on the environment. Eileen Fisher (2016) states 'The clothing industry is the second largest polluter in the world ... second only to oil.' </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>This fashion show uses natural fabrics such as peace silk allowing the moth to safely emerge from its cocoon as well as up-cycled fashion and organic fabrics. The collection is a celebration of sustainable materials drawing inspiration from the cocoon and moth/butterfly. The show features live music and dance to create a thought provoking narrative, suggesting the fleeting life of the moth/butterfly much like the empheral nature of fashion. The fashion takes inspiration from Alexander McQueen fashion shows and Nick Knight by incorporating a fashion film into the fashion show experience. The late Alexander McQueen (2011) once stated 'Fashion...the show...should make you think, there's no point in doing it if its not going to create some sot of emotion.' The fashion film uses inovative technology including the use of chroma key to project butterfly footage and nature shots. The prints displayed on the garments in this collection were produced from the original fashion film resulting in hybridity.</DIV>

<DIV>Collectively we all are responsible for the future of our planet. This fashion show is based in the belief that sustainable fashion can have a better impact on the environment. Edwina Ehrman (2018), curator of the recent sustainable exhibition, Fashioned from Nature at the V&A believes it is not too late to make a difference. Ehrman (2018) argues 'The hour is upon us, but if we act swiftly and boldly we can leave a world to future generations marked not by the suffering of nature and some of its people, but by a world marked by human progress.’ This collection and associated event aims to show that sustainability can be cutting edge and in the long run a kinder fabric to mankind.</DIV>
