Sweet Selly

for-Wards is an ambitious two-year city-wide music project to create original musical compositions inspired by Birmingham’s 40 wards.The city of Birmingham is geographically divided into ten districts, and each district contains 4 wards, such as Sparkbrook, Aston and South Yardley where we undertook our successful pilot project in 2015, culminating with live performances.The project is citywide, in Year 1 we invited 5 composers (of various musical styles ranging from classical to Hip Hop, Alternative pop to rock), to work with local communities, go out field recording together and, interpret the brief in creative ways that reflect the culture of each ward in which they live. This project raises awareness of the youthful diversity, celebrates abundant Birmingham cultures and increases community spirit.Joinfor-Wardsin creating a cultural sound map of Birmingham and support the creation of 10 amazing pieces of music!! We’ll be announcing our selected composers throughout the campaign!

Brummie Composer Bobbie-Jane Gardner has been collaborating with communities from the four wards of Birmingham's Selly Oak district. Her collaborators are: Creative Writers from P-Cafe Stirchley, Billesley Year 5 Primary School students, University of Birmingham School students and Brandwood Elder’s Lunch group with the assistance of composer Roché van Tidens.  
Inspired by the stories and field recordings collected by each community group from their ward, Bobbie-Jane has co-created 4 short pieces, communicating impressions of each locality in which her collaborators either study, live, work or create.  
Each community group has been inspired by the natural sounds found in Selly Oak District: canals, lakes, bird songs yet each piece offers a different perspective, be it tipsy student weekends in Selly Oak ward, the legacy of Cadbury’s cocoa innovations in Bournville ward, the darker shades of life in Brandwood ward and finally a joyful, community piece communicated in Billesley Ward. 
Sweet Selly will take place at Bournville Junior School on Friday 23rd June at 6pm. Join us for a little tea party including performances from local poets from P-Cafe’s Crunch Creative Writing group and 4 short works including performances from the community and  on the local carillon (played by Trevor Workman), and a quartet comprising sax, guitar, drums and bass.
