SWLUG Community Talks: Getting started with Kubernetes using k3s

SWLUG are an informal, friendly group of Linux and Free Software enthusiasts who meet regularly at various venues throughout South Wales.  We exist to support local users of the Linux operating system and other Free Software. To this end, we run a mailing list, IRC channel and, very occasionally, organise talks.  We're always happy to welcome anyone to join our meetings, have discussions on the mailing list or a chat in the IRC channel - whatever your interest or experience level.

<H3>Demo: Getting started with Kubernetes on k3s<BR></H3>
<P><SPAN>Daniel Morgan is a man on a mission to automate all the things. Currently a principal engineer at Nielsen, he's been in and around the South Wales tech scene for almost 20 years, and is a big believer in Everything-as-Code. Tonight he'll be presenting a practical demonstration of getting Kubernetes up and running on a Raspberry Pi with k3s.<BR></SPAN></P>
<H3>Linux on the IBM Z mainframe platform<BR></H3>
<P><SPAN>Marcus Davage <SPAN>is a STEM Ambassador and Code Club volunteer currently working as <SPAN>a Lead Product Developer for BMC Software</SPAN>. </SPAN>He started coding in COBOL on an IBM mainframe before moving on to sysadmin and DBA work. Tonight he'll be introducing us to Linux on IBM's Z mainframe platform.<BR></SPAN></P>
<H3><SPAN><SPAN>The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Migrating to the Wild West Kubuntu distro</SPAN></SPAN></H3>
<P><SPAN><SPAN>Ismael Velasco is a software developer working with the LAMP stack. He has a passion for food, storytelling and social impact.</SPAN> Tonight, he'll be sharing his experience of migrating to a full Linux desktop environment as a new user.  Audience participation highly recommended.<BR></SPAN></P>

<H2>Stuff you need to know<BR></H2>
<H3>Getting to the event</H3>
<P>The venue is about a 5-minute walk from Cardiff Queen Street station. Cardiff Bus services 28, 52, 57 and 58 stop next to the buildings on West Grove, and services 8, 9, 11, 30, 44, 45, 49, 50 stop a short distance away.</P>
<P>We will be in lecture theatre C/2.07.  Enter via the Trevithick Building entrance.  You may need to report to security before being allowed in.  From there, take the lift or steps up to the mezzanine level for the covered walkway across to the North Building.  Head up to the second floor, and follow directions to the Central Building corridor.</P>
<H3>Accessibility</H3>
<P>The venue is entirely accessible for persons of restricted mobility, and accessible facilities are available near the room itself.  If you have any specific needs, please let us know at registration and we will reach out to try and help.  The after-party is about a 5-minute walk away from the venue on level ground.</P>
<H3>Conduct</H3>
<P>We're not going to bite, and we expect our attendees are coming for the right reasons. To encourage this, we will be "borrowing" the <A HREF="http://bangbangcon.com/conduct.html" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">BangBangCon code of conduct</A>.  If you need help or support on the day, routes of contacting the organisers will be clearly signposted in and around the room.</P>
<H3>Recording</H3>
<P>The venue has a full recording facility, and we will be recording the talks and expect people will share content on social media.  A "safe area" will be in operation in which we will not take photographs, and we request that attendees also respect this.</P>
<H3>Refreshments</H3>
<P>There will be pizza and non-alcoholic drinks on hand during the event.  By default we will provide vegetarian options.  If you have any particular requirements, please let us know at registration and we will attempt to cater for you.</P>
<H3>Children</H3>
<P>We can't provide childcare, but young children are welcome with well-behaved parents.  Young people are welcome at the event, but those under 18 will need to be accompanied by someone 18 or older, especially at the after-party.</P>
