Join producers Paul Maple and Professor James Dyke for an exclusive screening of System Update.

In an era of accelerating climate change and cascading impacts, System Update is a bold new public documentary film that offers a vital look at how transformative shifts in politics, economics, and society can protect people from climate catastrophe. System Update calls for a reboot of outdated systems that have failed to respond to the climate crisis.

Producers Paul Maple and Professor James Dyke from the Global Systems Institute, University of Exeter, bring together world-leading experts and change-makers to explain why these systemic changes are critical, and how they can be achieved. The film is more than an informative piece; it’s a rallying cry for a better future - one in which the majority of people are united in calling for the changes needed to avert disaster.

“We are on course for utterly catastrophic climate disaster within the lifetimes of younger generations,” warns Professor Jason Hickel, who argues for a radical departure from today’s economic thinking in the film. This is contrasted with political leaders betting on untested technologies to reverse carbon emissions at some point in the future. System Update presents the reality: the time for action is now.

The film explores how past social movements, such as the suffragettes and the civil rights movement, have paved the way for monumental change, and shows how the same spirit can drive climate action today.

International climate lawyer Farhana Yamin joins the film to explain how people’s movements bring about social change, while climate campaigner Manda Brookman reminds viewers that “governments have to do what people want.” Max Wakefield, of climate action charity Possible, emphasises that change is possible at all levels - personal, social, and political.

Changing ‘The System’ is daunting, but what we must it do now. System Update offers insights into how this can be achieved, making complex issues understandable and accessible to all. Three years in the making, this film is completely non-profit and free to watch. The solutions exist. For this to become reality it’s vital everyone join in this movement for change.
