About this event

  • Event lasts 30 minutes

Discover more about the Order of St John, St John Ambulance and the history of Clerkenwell at our free Ten-Minute Talk and Tea events. Tea and biscuits provided.

From a handful of books in the 1830s, the Museum collection has grown to be large and diverse, ranging from bed pans to fine art, including objects from around the world, from the Roman era to the present day. While many items have been at the heart of the Museum for decades, what we know about some of these objects has changed over time.

This talk will explore how and why our understanding of the Museum’s collections and history continues to evolve. Learn how persistent sleuthing, surprising discoveries, baffling mysteries and scientific experiments have revealed the work of the finest craftsmen, early examples of up-cycling, misidentifications, and raised even more questions.

This is a free, relaxed event. Drop-ins are welcome, or you can pre-register through Eventbrite. The event will take place in the Museum Galleries which are on ground level with step-free access throughout.

The Museum of the Order of St John tells the unique story of an ancient religious military Order, from its origins caring for sick pilgrims in eleventh century Jerusalem, through to its modern-day role with St John Ambulance, the international first aid charity.
