About this event

  • 5 hours 30 minutes

Talk Boost KS2 is a targeted intervention aimed at children 7-10 year old children who need help with talking and understanding words, aiming to boost their language skills helping them to catch up with their peers. The programme aims to accelerate children’s progress in language and communication, after an eight week intervention.

Children who are selected to take part in the intervention will attend three sessions per week in small groups, each lasting 30-40 minutes delivered by the teaching assistant. The sessions include activities that follow the areas of language and communication: listen carefully, learning new words, telling stories, working with others and making friends and having conversations. In addition, the teacher will run a weekly whole-class activity and there are activities that can be practiced at home.

Aims:

This course provides you with the understanding of how to use the Talk Boost KS2 programme which is a structured and robustly evidenced programme with a great set off resources that can significantly boost a child's language and communication skills. The programme:

  • Supports children who are not achieving expected levels of progress in their language development that may be presenting with different language development or struggling with their learning in general.
  • Is designed to be sustainable so you can deliver the intervention multiple times to new groups of children.
  • Enables you to identify, monitor and track children’s progress before and following the intervention with the paper or online trackers.

Talk Boost highly recommends that a teacher and teaching assistant from the same setting jointly attend the training to implement the approach for it to be successful. The ticket price is reflective of this, aiming for each single ticket to cover both a teacher and teaching assistant partnership. A teacher and teaching assistant should purchase 1 ticket for both of them and put both their names down

Please note: This course will be run as an online training session via Microsoft Teams. When you book, you will receive information about how to access the training and how the session will be run.

Please note that our training courses and workshops are designed to be interactive, to ensure participants get the most from the session. With this in mind, we ask that you check to ensure that both your camera and microphone are working prior to the course.

Talk Boost tickets are based on 1 – 2 participants attending from the same setting with the aim that the 2 participants implement the approach jointly in their setting. Additional participants who have not bought a ticket are not allowed to sit and watch the training, either in or out of the camera view. Additional participants in the room, who have not purchased a ticket, will be asked to leave.

*This fee covers 1-2 participants from the same setting. We recommend 1 Teacher and 1 Support Staff member attend together

*This fee does not include cost for resources pack (£550 from Speech and Language UK).

Once you have signed up for the training, you should purchase the TalkBoost KS2 resources through the Speech and Language UK website https://speechandlanguage.org.uk/ and add the name of the tutor in the purchase of the resources – Hayley Thurston
