Description

Talking Science at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL)

Talking Science at RAL is a series of fascinating and FREE monthly scientific lectures by invited speakers that takes place at STFC's Rutherford Appleton Laboratory every month between September and June. More information about these talks can be found on our website: www.stfc.ac.uk/rltalkingscience. Once a talk is fully booked we start a waiting list - if you would like to be added to our waiting list, please email rltalkingscience@stfc.ac.uk. Many tickets are returned in the week of the talk, so please check back here a few days before to see if any have become available.

Please note that in order to allow you to book all Talking Science tickets from the same page, the date / calendar function in Eventbrite may not reflect the date or time of the talk for which you have booked. The time and date of your booked talk is shown in the ticket name you have chosen.

Due to the large number of last minute cancellations and no shows, we will only be releasing one talk per month, instead of three per season. These talks will be released for booking on the 5th of each month from 07:00 for the talk the following month – for example, the tickets for October's talk will be released on 5th September.

The talks this season are:

  • Friday 20 September - How do we know anything? And how can we know things better? (12+) by Dr Michael de Podesta

  • Friday 18 October - Bring Back the King: The Extraordinary Science of De-Extinction (12+) by Dr Helen Pilcher

  • Friday 15 November - Vampires – not for the nervous! (12+) by Dr Kathryn Harkup

  • Friday 6 December - Energy & climate change (12+) by Sarah James

  • Friday 17 January - Genesis of a Queen: Queen Mary 2 (10+) by Stephen Payne

  • Friday 21 February - Earth's Climate Evolution: 800 million years of climate change and its multiple causes (12+) by Dr Colin Summerhayes

  • Friday 20 March - Engineering enzymes to digest our most polluting plastics (12+) by Professor John McGeehan

  • Friday 17 April - Rosalind Franklin and her legacy (12+) by Dr Laura Holland and Professor James Naismith

  • Friday 15 May - From citizen science to genetics: how can you help us tackle the resistance of tuberculosis to antibiotics? (12+) by Dr Philip Fowler

  • Friday 12 June - Saving the Mary Rose cannonballs (all ages) by Hayley Simon

All talks take place at 13:30 and again at 19:00 at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The talks last between 45 and 60 minutes with questions at the end. Parking is available onsite for both lunchtime and evening talks, but parking is limited at lunchtime so we cannot guarantee everyone a space. Additional parking is available, but is a short walk away - please allow up to 15 minutes for this. As we are a working laboratory, we regret that we cannot reserve parking spaces - even disabled bays.

All queries should be directed to rltalkingscience@stfc.ac.uk. We aim to answer these emails as often as we can, but we are only a small team, so please be patient, we will reply as soon as we can.
