Description

Typefounding

An introduction to Monotype
punchcutting and hot-metal casting

For centuries the production of printers’ type was a highly secretive business, with the ‘dark arts’ of punchcutting and type casting passed down only by example and word of mouth.

As holders of the National Typefounding Collection, the Type Archive are proud to preserve not only pre-eminent historic materials but, through the operation of machinery from the Monotype Corporation (on-site since 1996), keep the typefounding process alive through practise.

The evening will comprise two talks, under the setting of the completion of the first new Monotype series in over 40 years, ‘Hungry Dutch’ by Russel Maret:

Richard Ardagh will introduce the engraving of Monotype punches and the precision tools required to achieve ten-thousandths-of-an-inch tolerances as standard.

Ian Gabb will discuss the casting of hot-metal type on Monotype composition and supercasters with their thousands of custom-engineered moving parts.

Tours of the Matrix and Casting workshops prior to the talks are being offered to a limited number of guests. Places are extremely limited and must be booked in advance.

Tours will start promptly at 6.30pm

Talks begin at 7.10pm

[BOOK TICKETS]

All proceeds go to the preservation of the Type Archive site and extensive library. Drinks and books will be on sale on the night (cash only).
