This Tech York will explore the emerging importance of immersive tech and how storytelling can be evolved to create amazing new experiences. We'll also be touching on 'tech communities' and hearing about a fab interactive media event in July.

In a rapid culture of “learn the churn” of a high turnover of technology increments – how can we create self-sustaining communities to support knowledge gain? It is happening – here in the City of York. I will show you where and how.

18:30-18:50 - Telling stories that fit: Interactivity, adaptability and immersion in video-based media.

Dr Davy Smith will discuss how media convergence has enabled interactive, data-driven and artificial intelligence approaches to video-centric storytelling. Through applying such technologies, storytellers are given the ability to craft highly immersive, personalised and responsive experiences. Davy will introduce a pioneering collaborative project between the DC Labs and the BBC into the development of Object-Based Broadcasting; media that is responsive to the context of the viewer. He will explore the possibilities enabled by this innovative new medium of video-centric storytelling.

Dr Davy Smith is a researcher based in the Digital Creativity Labs, University of York.

18:55 - 19:00 - Introducing: Interactive Media Showcase

Joe Lamyan will be giving us a quick overview of this event designed to promote the sheer variety of skills and talent that the UoY Interactive Media course has to offer. The event will include Critical and User Experience Design, Virtual Reality experiences and Humanities dissertation pieces. (The Showcase will take place Friday 15th June, 6 PM within the Department of Theatre, Film and Television.)
