Please note - this training is only for Sheffield City Council Foster Carers. This training is being provided by the Leaving Care Team for foster carers and fostering social workers who have ‘staying put’ young people in their care or any carers that want to help prepare their young people for independence. 

Foster Carers will learn about the ‘Tenancy Ready programme’ which is a six week targeted programme being delivered to young people by the Leaving Care Team. This is a chance for foster carers and fostering social workers to learn more about this programme so that they can also incorporate the skills and knowledge base for having a tenancy with the young people in their care.


The Tenancy Ready Programme supports young people with:
• Looking at properties and tenancy options
• Setting a budget for their home
• Identifying sources of affordable furniture / carpets / second hand / local schemes
• Choosing utility providers and payment options
• Identifying what they want and need within a home, and making their setting up home allowance go further
• Looking after themselves
•	Locating and registering with local healthcare services: GP, dentist, opticians, and health groups in your area
•	Identifying affordable food / meals, learning to cook on a budget, learning about food safety and “best before dates”, and planning your food shop
•	Practical skills: using a cooker, washing machine, reading labels, how to iron, how to stitch, mains off and isolate water, know where and how to look at your fuse box and sources of energy supply into their home
•	Moving in day
•	Inventory of what they will need
•	Viewing a property
•	Identifying issues and repairs
•	Maintaining a property
•	Repairs
•	Who to contact in an emergency
•	Outlining their rights and responsibilities as a tenant, and where they can get advice and support in the future
•	Making money go further and maximizing their income with education, training, and employment
