Join us for a photography workshop led by Belfast Exposed for the launch of Wiki Loves: A Future for Thatch photography competition!

Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Ulster Folk Museum, this event is designed to celebrate our built heritage and sharpen your photography skills.

Whether you are a seasoned pro or a casual photographer, this workshop will help you capture the intricacies of traditional thatched buildings.

This workshop is being delivered as part of Future for Thatch project, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This workshop aims to increase awareness of thatched buildings and their settings in Northern Ireland.

Spaces are limited to ensure a high-quality experience for all participants. Register now to secure your spot!

Places are limited to 8 attendees in order to maximise participant learning and safety. If you are no longer able to attend, please notify the organiser as soon as possible to allow your place to be released.


What to Expect

Led by the experts at Belfast Exposed, Northern Ireland's premier photography organisation, this one-hour community workshop will guide you through the essentials of architectural and heritage photography.

You can bring your own camera or smartphone to take photos, and Belfast Exposed will also provide digital cameras for use. Participants who wish to use a provided camera should also bring a USB with them to transfer the photos on to.

This workshop is suitable for all those interested in photography and for all abilities.

Thatch is more than just a roofing material; it is a living craft that is rapidly disappearing from our landscape. This workshop is your chance to understand how best to document these amazing buildings while gaining professional insights from Belfast Exposed.

22nd May will also be the opening day of our Wiki Loves: A Future for Thatch Competition. Submit your best shots to the global 'Wiki Loves' initiative and contribute to the digital preservation of our history. Search Wiki Loves: A Future for Thatch to learn more. Wiki Loves: A Future for Thatch will be open for entries from 22nd May-30th June 2026.


Important information for attendees:

This event is limited to a maximum of 8 attendees. Attendees should wear sensible footwear, and it is advised that attendees wear warm clothing/ layers as the main portion of the workshop will be outside. Note: Please meet at the ticket kiosk beside the Ulster Folk Museum car park at 10:25am to ensure a prompt start.

Getting here:

There is parking at the Ulster Folk Museum, and participants are encouraged to take public transport wherever possible. The Ulster Folk Museum is located near the Cultra Train station, which has frequent trains to/ from Belfast.
