The 2022 Giulio Regeni Memorial Lecture

About this event
To honour the memory of Giulio Regeni 6 years after his kidnap and murder in Cairo, the Cambridge University Italian Society invites Dr Elisabetta Brighi (University of Westminster) to deliver the annual Giulio Regeni Memorial Lecture.
The title of the lecture is: ‘Illusions of democracy – Europe and Egypt between interests, rights, and violence’.

Elisabetta Brighi is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Westminster. Between 2012 and 2014 she was a Lecturer at the Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Cambridge. Her main research interests are theories of violence, particularly mimetic approaches to violence, and the relation between emotions, politics, and violence. She is also an expert in Italian foreign policy, on which she has published extensively. Most recently she has authored the essay ‘A cosa servono i complotti?’, in Minnena: Repressione, Disinformazione e Ricerca tra Egitto e Italia (Mesogea, 2021).

intimidation, harassment, bullying, discrimination, derogatory or demeaning conduct related to age, gender, sexual orientation, race, language, political or other opinions, national or social origin, disability, physical appearance, religion or other status.
Participants found to be engaging in behaviour that violates this code of conduct will be dealt with in line with the University’s harassment procedures.

Arriving by Train
There are frequent rail services from London King's Cross and Liverpool Street stations, and regular trains from the Midlands and further field.

Cambridge Railway Station is situated one mile from the town centre. The Lecture Block is about a 30 minute walk from Cambridge Railway Station. There is a regular bus service (Universal Bus) from the railway station stopping on West Road, which runs along one side of the Sidgwick Site. If you prefer, you can catch a taxi at the station and ask to be taken to the Sidgwick Site.

Arriving by Bus or Coach
Drummer Street Bus Station, and the adjacent Parkside Coach Rank are situated in Cambridge centre. The Lecture Block is about a 15 minute walk from the Bus Station, or if you prefer you can catch a taxi from the Bus Station.

Arriving by Car
Directions to the Lecture Block from the M11:
- Exit the M11 at Junction 12.
- Follow the A603 (Barton Road) eastwards into Cambridge.
- You should pass Wolfson College on your left and the Hat and Feathers pub on your right.
- Turn left into Grange Road (just past a pedestrian crossing).
- Take the second right hand turn into Sidgwick Avenue.
- Turn left into the Sidgwick Site, where the Lecture Block is located. Use the on-site maps or use the maps linked to above to locate the Lecture Block building.
Cambridge and the Surrounding Region
Parking
On the Sidgwick Site parking is limited and restricted to permit holders only, it is often possible to find metered street parking near the Lecture Block in Sidgwick Avenue, Queen's Road and West Road (4-hour periods are allowed). There are also a number of car parks in the city centre and five Park & Ride sites around the city, the nearest one being on Madingley Road.
