Description

TRADA and Exova BM TRADA are excited to introduce Better Timber Buildings, a stimulating one day conference focused on inspiring and improving timber's competitive advantage by learning from our collective experience.

Set aside Thursday 15 November 2018 and join us at the Royal Geographical Society in the heart of London's architecturally rich museum district for a day of talks, Q&A, energetic discussion and networking.

Session 1: Set the scene and inspire:

  • Key note address - Structural Timber in the 2020s: key priorities for the sector - Anthony Thistleton, Partner, Waugh Thistleton - The UK has arguably led the way in pushing out the boundaries of using structural timber in the last 20 years. As the next decade draws near, what opportunities should we go after and where do we need to strengthen our offering? As a pioneer in this field, Anthony reflects on his practice’s experience and what he believes is possible if we up our game to the next level.
  • Inspirational timber case study: Macallan Distillery & Visitor Experience with Paul Edwards, Associate, Arup - We are delighted to invite the world renowned practice of Arup to inspire us by presenting their recently completed project for Edrington on an estate that has been creating malt whisky since 1824. The building has won many awards and is arguably one of the most complex timber structures ever built in the UK.

Session 2: Power of guidance: encapsulating past experience

  • From the Eiffel Tower to a local swimming pool: a timber building concept design masterclass with James Norman, Author - Using some extreme examples (!), author James Norman takes us through TRADA’s recently published Pre-scheme Design Guide to show how you (and the client) can quickly and confidently determine if and how to build any structure in timber. The goal is to ensure that building specifications start out in timber, rather than in another material with the associated painful task of conversion.

  • Avoid mistakes and that deep feeling of regret: learn from others’ combined experience with Kelly Harrison, Associate engineer, Heyne Tillett Steel and Greg Cooper, Pre Construction Director, Hybrid Construction Ltd - Greg will explain how to use TRADA’s National Structural Timber Specification (NSTS) as a ‘Starter for 10’ that allows you to easily avoid all the common mistakes made by others! Kelly will use some recent case studies at Heyne Tillett Steel to pull out examples of where the document can really save you time and hassle.

Session 3: Tackling critical performance criteria: fire safety and durability

  • What are the fire performance requirements for timber cladding / structural walls? with Rupert Scott, Exova BM TRADA - Grenfell Tower, the Hackitt Review and the recent government consultation proposing the banning of combustible materials on the walls of high rise buildings raise a lot of important questions for the construction industry. Rupert will take us through the current regulations and guidance on fire as it relates to timber and update us on what we know of the changes that lie ahead.

  • Making sure that timber structures are durable with Robin Lancashire, Timber Frame Consultant, Exova BM TRADA - This summer excepted, buildings are almost always rained on during the construction phase! So how do we build large timber buildings and not suffer the consequences of the timber members becoming too wet? Robin outlines the key principles and practical tips that will help avoid costly mistakes.

Session 4: Learning from history – from our successes and mistakes

  • What can we learn from NHBC’s reports on timber structure buildings? with Marc Separovic, Senior Technical Project Manager, NHBC - Quite a lot we believe, which is why we have invited Paul to drill down into NHBC’s reports for the whole of the UK, to pull out some key lessons that will help the structural timber industry deliver a better result – providing of course we follow his advice!

  • Correctly costing timber structures: the benefits and methods with Oliver Booth, Partner, Gardiner & Theobold - Structurally building with timber is not the same as with steel or concrete; it has its own benefits and specific requirements. Understanding these is vital to the process of correctly estimating and controlling costs; without which you will either miss opportunities or fail to deliver what should have been possible. Oliver will share the key learning points made by Gardiner & Theobald, who have been the appointed QSs on many large timber structural projects.
