The Chimp Paradox - Links between the Chimp Paradox and Counselling and Psychotherapy models
“The Chimp Paradox” by Steve Peters is a recent best-seller in the self-help market and is also popular with business professionals.
The Chimp Paradox explains how your mind works and how you can manage it. It helps you identify how you sabotage yourself and gives tips on how to manage your emotions, instead of them managing you. Chris Hoy and the British Olympic Cycling Team were coached by Steve Peters and used the Chimp Paradox techniques to help them have the right mindset for victory.
At the end of the workshop you will:
- Be familiar with the basics of the Chimp Paradox and some critiques of it.
- Have compared how the Chimp Paradox relates to your counselling orientation or model.
You don’t need to have read the book beforehand, but if you would like to you can get copies here: https://www.waterstones.com/books/search/term/chimp+paradox
We will end the session by briefly sharing any other self-help books which your clients have found useful, so please bring your favourites along!
Rachel Weiss MBACP (Accred), ICF (ACC), is an accredited counsellor and coach. Rachel started as a humanistic counsellor and became more eclectic or integrated (!) in her practice as she matured, adding some CBT training along the way. Rachel then trained as a coach, building on her counselling skills and now coaches managers and private individuals to help them learn and develop.
I read The Chimp Paradox because some of my clients mentioned it; they connected the work we did together with concepts from the book, so I thought it might be useful to be familiar with it. Maybe your clients have read it to, or you may find it useful and want to recommend it to them?
I was intrigued by how this simplistic model captures some of the truths of our counselling models. I am offering this workshop to explore the link between the Chimp Paradox and counselling, I’ll give an overview of the Chimp Paradox, we’ll explore links with our counselling practice and then have the chance to share other books our clients have found useful.
