The Divide

The University of Manchester has been at the forefront of Development Studies for over 60 years.As addressing poverty and inequality becomes an increasingly global project, we’re uniting the strengths of the Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM) and the Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI), to create the Global Development Institute in February 2016.The Global Development Institute will build on The University of Manchester’s world-leading reputation for Development Studies research, which has seen us ranked 1st for impact and 2nd for quality in the UK Research Excellence Framework 2014, and third in the QS World University Rankings.

The University of Manchester is proud to host a screening of The Divide on Thursday 10th November as part of the week-long national <A HREF="http://www.esrc.ac.uk/public-engagement/festival-of-social-science/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">ESRC Festival of Social Science</A>.
The Divide tells the story of seven individuals striving for better lives in the US and UK where the top 1% owns as much wealth as the bottom 90%.
Inspired by the best-selling book “The Spirit Level,” these real stories uncover how virtually every aspect of our lives is controlled by the divide between rich and poor.
Wall Street psychologist Alden wants to make it to the top 1%; KFC worker Leah from Virginia just wants to make it through the day; Jen in California has neighbours in her upscale gated community who dont't talk to her because she isn’t “their kind”.
Featuring news archive from 1979 to the present day, The Divide creates a lyrical, psychological and tragi-comic picture of how economic division creates social division.
