Dolphin Bycatch Project - Investigating cetacean bycatch through citizen science - learn about the work and how you can get involved!

Bycatch is one of the most significant global threats to marine mammals, such as dolphins and porpoises. According to bycatch monitoring efforts, thousands of porpoises are accidentally caught in fishing gear each year in the UK waters alone. When dolphins and porpoises wash up on our coast (strands), it gives us a great opportunity to learn more about these animals and the threats they face. Volunteers and citizen scientists can play a vital part to investigate strandings, not just reporting strandings but also collecting information and investigating the stranding. For over 20 years, Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network teams have developed a unique method to investigate bycatch using photographs of stranded dolphins and porpoises, called BEEP (Bycatch Evidence Evaluation Protocol).BEEP has been used and improved over the years by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, but it sadly isn’t recognised as a valid scientific method for monitoring strandings. The Cornwall Wildlife Trust and the University of Exeter are working together to scientifically test, develop and publish BEEP as a valuable tool for strandings investigation. We want you to get involved and take part in this important piece of citizen science!£2 per person to attend - all money will be donated to the cause. Zoom will open at 6.30pm. Talk begins at 7pm
