'Decolonizing the Intersection' by Professor Tommy J. Curry, Distinguished Professor of Africana Philosophy &amp; Black Male Studies Chaired by Dr Radhika Govinda, Senior Lecturer in SociologyIntersectionality, it is said, leads to a clearer social analysis of power and hierarchies throughout society and within groups. This public lecture will explore how intersectionality has also cultivated various negative theories about Black men and boys. In this way, the claims of intersectionality fail to distinguish itself from previously racist theories that sought to explain race, class, and gender, based on subgroup values. This means that while intersectionality has allowed women to create nuanced experiences and, including accounts of Black womanhood, the very same theory has confined Black male experience to the perpetration of violence.Professor Tommy J. Curry is a scholar of Africana Philosophy and his areas of specialization are: 19th century ethnology, Critical Race Theory, Social Political Theory, and Black Male Studies. He is the author of The Man-Not: Race, Class, Genre, and the Dilemmas of Black Manhood (Temple University Press 2017), which won the 2018 American Book Award, and his public intellectual work earned him the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy’s Alain Locke Award in 2017. He is a past recipient of the USC Shoah Foundation and A.I. and Manet Schepps Foundation Teaching Fellowship (2017), and the past president of Philosophy Born of Struggle, one of the oldest Black philosophy organizations in the United States.The Edinburgh Race Lectures are a series of events organised in collaboration with RACE.EDRACE.ED is a cross-university network concerned with race, racialization and decolonial studies from a multidisciplinary perspective.RACE.ED showcases excellence in teaching, research and knowledge, exchange, impact (KEI) in race and decolonial studies at The University of Edinburgh.The work of the network seeks to support an understanding of the persistence of race and racialization as both historical projects and dynamic phenomenon that shape the present.PLEASE NOTE:If you have any accessibility requirements, please contact the organiser at protocol.office@ed.ac.uk.
