Part of the Nottinghamshire Festival of Science and Curiosity 2024!Bennerley Viaduct stands 20 meters above the beautiful Erewash Valley. But would an egg survive the drop? Only one way to find out! Flex your scientific skills and create the best parachute to save your egg! With help from real engineers from the STEM Ambassadors Team. Drop-in activity, arrive any time. Most suitable for ages 7+ but all welcome. Activity is repeated on Saturday 17th but for all ages. Free but donations of £3 to cover materials are appreciated. The activity should take around 30 minutes but you can extend your visit with a walk across the deck or through the new nature reserve. Free maps are available online and at activity.Booking is strongly advised. Tickets should be booked only for children taking part. Adults and non-participating children do not need a ticket, but are welcome to come along as we respect that families come in many sizes! Location:The event is taking place on the top of the viaduct near the ramp (see map below, number 2)Parking is provided at a compound underneath the viaduct. The top of the viaduct is a 15-minute walk including some steps. (maps below, the car park is at number 9, footbridge 10, ramp is number 2.) Volunteers will be on hand to direct you.If you prefer step-free access you can reach the ramp by walking along the Erewash Canal Towpath. Parking is available on the road, please be mindful of our neighbours. (see 1)A suggested donation of £3 is appreciated.Practical Details:<ul><li>Sturdy shoes or wellies are recommended. The walk has some uneven pathways, some steps.</li><li>We may cancel if the weather makes the event unsuitable or unsafe. We will notify you by email if you have booked.</li></ul><ul><li>There are no toilets or baby change on site. The closest public toliets are at Tesco, Ilkeston.</li></ul>How to get here:PLEASE IGNORE THE POSTCODE IN THE DESCRIPTIONThe viaduct parking area has no postcode. The code is included only to help you locate Awsworth Road.- Parking is provided in a compound underneath the viaduct. Access this via a lane on Awsworth Road.- If you are coming from Nottingham (A6096, Shilo Way) turn right onto Newton's Lane/ Awsworth Road. Then turn right onto the lane before the railway bridge.- If you are coming from Ilkeston/ Cotmanhay, drive down Awsworth Road until you reach the railway bridge. Take your first left immediately after the railway bridge.-The gate to the lane will be open.-Drive down the tarmac lane until you arrive underneath the viaduct.-Volunteers will be on hand to direct parking. There is a railway footbridge with 40 stairs up and down on the Ilkeston side. There is a full circular walk which includes these challenges, but from the Erewash Canal side, the viaduct is a fully accessible ramp. There are no toilets or baby change on site. The closest public toliets are at Tesco, Ilkeston. There are no refreshments, but close by is an organic farm Trinity Farm Shop and Cafe, Awsworth, with toilets and parking. There are benches underneath in the nature reserve and picnics are welcome.
