The Equal Architect Symposium

Missing in Architecture is a collection of architects and educators who want to promote creativity and action within the profession. We are interested in filling in the gaps in architecture that we care about.we believe in:producing socially and politically provocative piecesbeing creative and sensitive to our ever changing environmentbeing innovative and imaginativeengaging with the community and council and everyone in betweenstarting a continuing conversation about all areas of architecture and the built environment

THE EQUAL ARCHITECT SYMPOSIUM 7TH + 8TH MARCH 
The Equal Architect symposium hosted by Missing in Architecture and the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art and in collaboration with Creative Scotland, GSA Sustainability Group, Architecture and Design Scotland and the GIA aims to enhance awareness and understanding of the significance of female architects within the education system and the profession and to provoke discussions to create a more equal environment for all whilst celebrating the work of past, present and future generations of architects.
 
THURSDAY 7TH MARCH 17.30 REID LECTURE THEATRE, GSA (supported by the GIA)

FRIDAY 8TH MARCH 9.00 ART CLUB, BATH STREET
A celebration and discussion surrounding the themes of Equality and Diversity, Education and Inspiration, Identity and Pracitce and Future. The symposium will involve short presentations from our guest speakers that will then open into discussions with all our guests. 
Lunch and Tea and Coffee will be provided throughout the day.
The symposium will end with the Friday Lecture in Reid Lecture Theatre at GSA with our key note speaker SARAH WIGGLESWORTH.
Our Guest Speakers are:
Helen Aston - Manchester School of Architecture, co-founder of PRAXXIS, a feminist architectural collective.
Another Perspective - Mackintosh School of Architecture student initiated project founded in response to a gap in the curriculum in architectural education.
Jos Boys - Co-founder of Matrix, Feminist Design Co-operative in 1979, co-auther of Making Space: women and the man-made environment and founder of 'The Dis-ordinary Architecture Project' exploring how disability and accessibilty can be done 'differently'.
Isabel Deakin - Studio Tutor at Mackintosh School of Architecture and co-founder of Missing in Architecture
Alisha Morenike Fisher - co-founder of Black Females in Architecture and 3.09 Design Collective which highlights migratory experiences both culturally and geographically within the built environment. 
Dr Harriet Harriss - is an architect, a Reader in Architectural Education and leads the Post-Graduate Research programmes in Architecture at the Royal College of Art. Her recent publication 'A Gendered Profession' asserts the need for widening participation as a means to ensure professions remain as diverse as the society it seeks to serve.
Conor Keappock - recent graduate with an interest in changes in LGBTQI+ nightlife within the city of Glasgow
Kirsty Lees - Studio Tutor at Mackintosh School of Architecture and partner in Tectonica Architects
Kathy Li - Stage 1 Leader at Mackintosh School of Architecture and co-founder of Missing in Architecture
Nadia Malekian - recent graduate with an interest in a feminist approach to architecture and urban design
Abigail Patel - currently undertaking her MArch at The Manchester School of Architecture, student representative on the RIBA North West regional council and the RIBA National Council.
Flora Samuel - first RIBA Vice President of Research, member of RIBA Council and Professor of Architecture in the Built Environment at the School of Architecture at the University of Reading. Recently published the book  'Why Architects Matter'
John Thorne - Sustainability Co-ordinator for The GSA Sustainability Group
Miranda Webster - Studio Tutor at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, partner at Cameron Webster Architects and co-founder of Missing in Architecture
Voices of Experience - a collaborative project led by Suzanne Ewing, Jude Barber and Nicola McLachlan. Voices of Experience is motivated by the lack of recognised female presence and role models within architecture and the build environment
