About this event

Hobbies • Photography

This workshop dives into the magic of real 35mm film. Forget digital perfection, we are all about the unique grain, those subtle imperfections, and the undeniable mood only film delivers. You'll learn to shoot with intention, embracing film's limits to create photos that feel authentic, textured, and truly lived-in. It's about slowing down, really seeing, and trusting your gut, focusing on genuine presence over flawless shots.

This Workshop Is For You If…

  • You’ve shot some digital or film but want to go deeper into intentional, atmospheric photography
  • You are drawn to the look of real 35mm film
  • You want to learn by doing, not sitting through a lecture
  • You're looking to slow down and rediscover the joy of a more thoughtful, analogue creative process

What You’ll Get

  • Intimate group size, limited to 2 participants.
  • A roll of 35mm film (choose from black & white or cinematic colour)
  • Film camera provided (typically with a 50mm f/1.8 lens or bring your own)
  • Guided photowalk through Soho’s gritty, character-filled streets
  • Real-time support on gear, exposure, and composition
  • Creative exercises tailored to the film stocks our location
  • A guide to the film stocks and their look
  • Your film developed and scanned by a trusted lab
  • Digital scans delivered in 14 days (no physical prints are provided)

What to Bring

  • Comfortable shoes and clothes for shooting outdoors
  • Curiosity, patience, and a willingness to embrace the unpredictable
  • A 35mm film camera (optional)

What You’ll Take Away

  • Confidence in shooting film, from loading a roll to mastering metering and composition.
  • A mindset shift: learning to slow down, see more deeply, and shoot with real intention.
  • A personal set of film photos that capture your unique perspective and pace in Soho.
  • A deeper understanding of how film interprets light, mood, and atmosphere.

Please note: Film can be unpredictable, and while I'll do everything I can to help you get good results I can't guarantee every image will come out. What I can promise is to guide you to fantastic locations, support your creative process, and ensure you have a brilliant time doing it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shoot more than one roll of film during the workshop?

You can, but it's not advised. The aim is to slow down, be intentional, and focus on making each shot count. One roll is plenty. If you really want to shoot more, you can buy an extra roll on the day for £25 (includes dev & scanning).

What happens if I don't finish my roll of film during the workshop?

Ideally, you should aim to finish your roll or come close to it during the session, as it’s all about getting into the rhythm of film shooting. I’ll have some ideas to help you wrap it up, but finishing during the workshop will give you the full experience.

Do I need to know how to use a film camera?

Some experience is helpful, but you don’t need to be an expert. I’ll guide you through everything from loading the film to shooting with intention. If you’re new to film, I’ll be there to support you!

Can I use a digital camera as well?

I strongly recommend against it. The whole point of the workshop is to slow down and commit to the film process. Switching between digital and film tends to break that rhythm.

Can I get my negatives back?

You can pay £5 to have your negatives posted to you, or collect them for free from N16. Please note, negatives not collected within 30 days of the workshop will be disposed of.

What quality are the scans?

The scans are provided in Standard Resolution JPEG format, at 3130x2075 pixels (approx. 5MB). This is ideal for sharing online or printing up to 6x4 inches.

Can I bring my own film?

I'd rather you didn't. The workshop is built around specific exercises designed for the film stocks I provide. Bringing your own film can work against the structure and intended flow of the session. Stick with what’s supplied, it’s chosen for a reason.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Workshops run in most weather. If it’s unsafe or extreme, I’ll reschedule or offer a refund or transfer. You’ll be notified in advance if anything changes.

What film stocks will be used?

Depends on availability. We typically shoot with Kodak Tri-X 400 and Candido 800.
