<H3>1. Making Web Development Fun with Scala and Scala.js<BR></H3>
<P>Noel Welsh, <A HREF="http://underscore.io" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">underscore.io</A></P>
<P><I>Scala is a statically typed object-functional language that compiles to Javascript and JVM bytecode. In this talk I'll show that Scala makes web development fast and fun.<BR><BR>Scala has two things that are unfamiliar to many developers: it heavily emphasises functional programming (FP), and it has a modern static type system. FP basics like first-class functions are becoming familiar to programmers from languages like Javascript and Java 8, but this is only scratching the surface of what makes FP interesting. Most developers have some experience with simple type systems in languages like C, Java, or Go, where their main purpose is to tell the compiler about memory layout so it can generate fast code. In modern type systems, like Scala's, we use types to represent program structure at an abstract level, and our own programs can make use of this information. For example, we can use types to automatically generate serialisation code without the runtime cost and danger of reflection.<BR><BR>In this talk I'll show how to build a questionnaire web service and front end in Scala, emphasising how Scala's unique features make the development process faster and more fun.</I></P>
<H3>2. Functional Web with Clojure and Clojurescript</H3>

<P><EM>Clojure is a simple, powerful and fun language to develop any and all applications. It has a simple syntax that is quick to learn and a wide range of Clojure libraries to build any kind of apps and services in a modular approach. Clojure also transpiles into small &amp; efficient JavaScript code via the use of Google Closure compiler, making it a great choice for client-side and mobile apps. <BR> <BR>Through code examples you will quickly learn Clojure's syntax and see that using Functional Programming (FP) concepts such as immutability, lazy evaluation &amp; first class functions makes it easier to create very clean, concise &amp; modular code. <BR> <BR>By the end of this session you will have experienced the dynamic workflow of Clojure, providing instant feedback on all your code changes.  You will see how much fun it is to code again.</EM></P>
