Concrete is the second most used material in the world after water. It is highly useful and the materials it is made from are available in all parts of the world. It is cheap and abundant and is used in developed and developing countries alike.

It is also a low carbon product, but due to its ubiquity, cement accounts for 7% of global CO2 production. In the UK this figure is 1.5% and the concrete industry have been working hard to reduce the CO2 produced. There has been a fall of 53% from the 1990 figures and more work is being done.

This presentation will cover what the cement and concrete industry are doing to get to net zero by 2050 and what engineers can do now to reduce the CO2 in the concrete that they specify.

Jenny Burridge, Head of Structural Engineering. MPA The Concrete Centre

Jenny leads the team of structural engineers at The Concrete Centre which is the central development organisation for the UK concrete industry dedicated to enabling all those involved in the design, use and performance of concrete.

Jenny is a chartered civil and structural engineer with more than 30 years’ experience in the construction industry. She has worked for Arup and AECOM designing award winning buildings in both the UK and mainland Europe. Prior to becoming Head of Structural Engineering she spent four years as a regional engineer with the Concrete Centre advising clients, engineers and architects on the most efficient and effective uses of concrete.

She is the UK representative on the CEN task group looking at revisions to the fire part of Eurocode 2 and chairs the BSI Advisory Committee for Engineering Design and Construction. She also sits on the Thames Valley Regional Group committee.
