Overview

Maydan Ensemble fuses modern jazz with Arabic, Anatolian & Persian folk — a vibrant, cross-cultural quintet redefining contemporary sound.

The Maydan Ensemble

The Maydan Ensemble of the North London Jazz Collective is a boundary-pushing quintet blending modern jazz with Arabic, Anatolian and Persian folk traditions. Formed at the start of 2025, they have already made a remarkable impact on the London scene, selling out multiple shows at venues such as Palestine House and The Green Note, while recently headlining Zeman Festival in Serbia.

This is a fully international ensemble featuring some of London’s most in-demand musicians:
• Egyptian-born rising star Amena, a breathtaking vocalist
• Irish–Iranian guitarist Kourosh Kanani, acclaimed for his inventive jazz phrasing
• Master reed player Parham Bahadoran (zurna, duduk, clarinet), one of London’s leading Iranian folk musicians
• Renowned Italian-English bassist Lorenzo Morabito (Giacomo Smith, Peter Horsfall, Mark Kavuma etc)
• London drummer Robbie Ellison (Steve Fishwick, Frank Basile etc), bringing energetic drive and deep swing

Together they explore the meeting point of jazz harmony and improvisation with regional folk melodies — reworking canonical jazz repertoire influenced by West Asia, while presenting their own jazz-infused arrangements of Arabic, Anatolian and Persian music.

‘Maydan’ means town square or public gathering place. From Farsi, the word now lives in Arabic, Turkish, Urdu, Georgian and Ukrainian — a fitting symbol for musical traditions rooted in communal life and collective expression. The ensemble embodies this spirit: music as a social act, shared, boundary-breaking, and proudly cross-cultural.
