<h3>You’ve likely heard the saying: “A jack of all trades is a master of none.” It may surprise you to learn there’s an extended version: “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” The latter version contradicts the common wisdom to stick to a single path, instead suggesting that we embrace multiple pursuits.</h3><p>In this session, we’ll explore the benefits of embracing a polymath lifestyle. Polymaths engage in extended learning across disparate fields, and apply their learnings to connect ideas and solve problems in unique ways. They’re well suited to thrive in a constantly changing environment, which is an increasingly important skill in today’s fast-changing world.</p><p>We’ll talk about why specialization can be problematic, and how to leverage the polymath advantage: building cross-disciplinary mental models, finding unique intersections of skills, and differentiating yourself with a unique niche.</p><p><strong>Salman Ansari</strong> is a software engineer, startup founder, writer, and artist. He currently splits his time between building software at an AI tech startup and exploring a variety of creative projects. Salman writes a weekly newsletter, Quick Brown Fox, on creativity, learning in public, and embracing a polymath life. He also writes essays and short stories, illustrates comics and animations, and publishes talks on YouTube. His past roles include: Founding Engineer at Involver (acquired by Oracle), Co-founder and CTO of the healthcare startup Rested, and Senior Engineer at Facebook.</p>
