How can we shape the way power shows up in our work, so more people with lived experience of social issues can drive change?

Thursday 8th July | 10:00-13:00 | FreeWednesday 14th July | 14:00-17:00 | FreeWe talk a lot about power in civil society: ‘sharing’, ‘shifting’, ‘speaking truth’ to power, ‘empowering’ others. But these can sound like empty buzzwords unless we stop and think clearly about what needs to change in practice.Some people with lived experience of poverty and inequality are not waiting for others to share power with them. For many, the formal social sector, even with all of its resources, networks and knowledge, is simply not a useful place through which to pursue the change they want. In our discussions this year, we heard that the barriers to equitable engagement are systemic, so the solution doesn’t lie in another ‘how to’ guide or a one-size-fits all response.We think developing our understanding of power, and learning to look at our work for change through a power lens, might help. This free, interactive, half-day workshop draws on what we’ve learned in the Power Sharing Project.It will also be an essential part of testing our thinking before we share our findings more widely. So, if you are not currently in a salaried social sector role, we can pay you £60 to attend (email sarah.thomas@smk.org.uk and we can discuss what works for you).During this half-day workshop you will:<ul><li>Understand how power is woven through civil society, enabling and constraining people from participating in social change</li><li>Discover tools to see more clearly the way that power shows up in your work for social change</li><li>Reflect on the power you have, to begin to re-shape how power operates in your work</li></ul>Who is this workshop for?<ul><li>Anyone seeking to centre the knowledge and insights of people with lived experience of social issues in social change</li><li>Those working for social change from within or outside of formal social sector organisations, seeking a better understanding of power</li><li>Anyone who would like to help develop the tools we’ve been exploring in the Power Sharing Project.</li></ul>Our partners at The Cornerstone Fund have asked us to collate information about who will be attending this workshop. You will be asked to share some details about yourself when you book, but feel free to tick ‘prefer not to say’ if that’s best for you.
