About this event
Presented to you by STEMpunx Lincs. The Science of Magic is a two-hour immersive event blending science, art, sound, and ritual to explore the relationship between mind, body, and environment. Participants will discover the scientific underpinnings of practices often described as “magical” — including the psychology of colour, the impact of stress on the body, the physics of sound healing, the chemistry of positive thought, and the medicinal and spiritual properties of herbs.
The event is designed to be both educational and experiential: Part One provides a grounding in science and theory, while Part Two allows participants to engage in guided practical activities, concluding with personalised takeaways.
Programme
Part One: The Science Behind the Magic (60 minutes)
Purpose: To introduce the concepts that underpin the experiential practices in Part Two.
18:00 – 18:10 | Introduction
· Welcome and overview of the session.
· Framing the idea of “magic” as the interplay between science, psychology, and ritual.
18:10 – 18:25 | The Art Cleanse: Colour, the Subconscious, and Stress
· Art cleanse explained: using creative expression to externalise subconscious thoughts.
· Colour psychology: how colours influence emotional states, with real-world applications in advertising and design.
· Neuroscience link: the effect of emotional stress on the central nervous system (CNS), and how suppressed emotions can manifest as physical symptoms.
18:25 – 18:40 | Sound, Frequency, and Affirmation
· Sound healing: the science of resonance, vibration, and frequency; links to quantum physics, entrainment, and neuroplasticity.
· Affirmations: positive self-talk and its measurable impact on brain chemistry, neuroendocrine responses, and wellbeing.
· The role of embodied practices (e.g., movement, rhythm, breath) in reinforcing positive neural pathways.
18:40 –18:55 | Herbalism and Bioscience
· Medicinal and spiritual significance of common garden herbs and flowers.
· Links between phytochemistry and human health, including antimicrobial resistance (AMR) considerations.
· The intersection of folklore and modern medical bioscience.
18:55 – 19:05 | Refreshment Break
· Participants are invited to enjoy iced water infused with fresh fruits.
· A tea station offering non-caffeinated infusions made from fresh herbs and flowers sweetened with stevia.
· Informal discussion time.
Part Two: Practical Magic (50 minutes)
Purpose: To experience the theories introduced in Part One through guided, creative, and restorative practices.
19:05 – 19:25 | Art Cleanse (Creative Release)
· Instructor-guided exercise: participants create a piece of expressive art designed to surface subconscious “blocks” or emotional hang-ups (framed positively as “themes for release or transformation”).
· Brief reflective discussion in pairs or small groups, encouraging insight into what the artwork may reveal.
19:25 – 19:45 | Sound Healing Journey
· A guided, meditative sound healing session using instruments such as crystal bowls, gongs, or chimes.
· Personalised affirmations (developed by participants in response to their art cleanse) woven into the soundscape.
· Focus on relaxation, release, and positive integration.
19:45 – 20:00 | Closing remarks, Spell Bags and Whispered Wishes
· Thank you, and reflection on the journey.
· Brief guidance on how to continue practices at home.
· Each participant creates a spell bag with herbs, small crystals, or symbolic tokens to take home as a tactile reminder of their healing process.
· Closing ritual: a whispered wish — a personal affirmation or sentiment softly shared by the guide, reinforcing connection and intention.
