Many of us spend our lives trying to push through or manage anxiety, overwhelm, exhaustion or emotional disconnection without understanding what our bodies are trying to communicate. In this workshop, psychotherapist and somatic practitioner Greg James explores how the nervous system shapes the way we think, feel and respond to the world, and how traumatic experiences can remain held within the body long after the events have passed. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of why many struggles are not signs that something is wrong with us, but adaptive responses from a nervous system working hard to keep us safe.

Drawing on somatic therapy, neuroscience and the StateShift® Model, this interactive workshop combines teaching and simple exercises to help participants recognise their own nervous system states in real time. You’ll leave with practical tools for grounding and regulation, downloadable resources, and a clearer understanding of how to work with your body rather than against it in moments of stress and overwhelm.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Explore how trauma and stress are held in the body
  • Recognise nervous system states and their impact on emotions and behaviour
  • Understand how the body responds to threat, safety and emotional overwhelm
  • Practise grounding and regulation techniques through guided exercises

Speaker Bio

Greg James is a psychotherapist and Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner who specialises in helping people understand and regulate the body’s responses to stress, anxiety and trauma.  He is the founder of The Centre of Somatic Resilience Training equipping practitioners in the art and science of somatic practice and is currently developing ACTS (Access to Community Trauma Support), a South African non-profit initiative focused on bringing nervous system education, trauma awareness and practical regulation skills into communities affected by violence and poverty.

Through years of clinical work and observing the profound impact of somatic approaches, Greg developed the StateShift® Model, a practical framework for understanding and regulating nervous system states. This work has led to invitations to present to the United Nations World Food Programme and forms the foundation of his book Why Your Body Speaks and How to Listen.
