His approach to engineering is quality focused, with an emphasis on consistency, best practice and technical excellence.James is a Software Engineer by training with a First Class Honours Masters degree in Software Engineering from The University of Sheffield. Throughout James’ career over the last decade, he has been a hands-on-engineer through to leading multiple teams building and deploying scalable applications.Experienced in technical leadership James has transformed poor-performing, high-attrition teams to delivering regularly and consistently. In transforming teams, James has re-built team cultures, instilled best practices, embedded continuous improvement processes and empowered individuals and teams to achieve.Talk 2: Mick Roper: Software Engineer @ DAZN&quot;Serverless Chaos&quot;.&quot;Serverless engineering is &#x27;3rd pillar&#x27; in the cloud operating model, alongside VMs and containers. It introduces many benefits - minimal operations overhead being the greatest. For those of us who want to prove the reliability of our systems with Chaos Engineering, this reduced control can become burdensome. You&#x27;re still gonna get the dreaded 3am call, so it’s best to be prepared, and in this talk, Mick will share some simple ideas that can help you introduce chaos principles to serverless applications.&quot;About the SpeakerMick has worked in software engineering for 10 years with companies of all shapes and sizes to deliver their goals, and currently a senior engineer @ DAZN. As Mick’s experience has increased, he has come to see how building &#x27;highly resilient systems&#x27; can sometimes be an afterthought in modern engineering, and is working hard to bring the disciplines of &#x27;high resilience&#x27; and &#x27;chaos engineering&#x27; to a world where we &#x27;move fast and break things’.&quot;Talk 3: Oliver Leaver-Smith: Senior DevOps Engineer – Sky Betting and GamingYou Did What?! The (condensed) story of why using the wrong tool for the job is sometimes the right thing to doThe company is ready to move to a cloud-first, container-focused way of working. It&#x27;s the DevOps dream. Except we don&#x27;t have a cloud platform to put these new containers on, and no expertise in creating one, and then there is the small matter of licensing restrictions stopping us from using any public cloud provider not based on an island in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy. Oh, and another area of the business might just be investing a lot of R&amp;D resource into creating a shared Kubernetes platform.Where did we come from? Where are we now? And what does the future hold? What&#x27;s it like to work on a project without mammoth scope creep? Most of the answers to these questions will be revealed.About the SpeakerOliver Leaver-Smith, better known as ‘Ols’, is a distinguished technologist currently working as a Senior DevOps Engineer at Sky Betting and Gaming. His topics of expertise include OpenBSD, automation, chaos and resilience engineering, and Nerf warfare.He is also interested in security, privacy, opensource, decentralisation and federation, hardware hacking, and cyberdecks.
