Broadcast & Partnerhsips, The Open University

The Open University is pleased to host BBC Radio 4’s Thinking Allowed and will be recording a future programme on campus, in front of an audience, as part of the OU/BBC partnership.  The panel will be discussing ‘Smart Cities’, looking at the social consequences of the growing role of digital technologies in organising the cities where we live.
There will be an opportunity for a few questions as part of the programme but we will also be opening this up after the recording for the audience to put more general questions to Laurie and the panel as part of a short video being made by us for OU platforms.
Presented by Laurie Taylor, <A HREF="https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qy05" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Thinking Allowed</A>  brings academics from across the social sciences to discuss new research on how society works. The panellists for this programme, Prof Gillian Rose, Prof Sophie Watson, and Dr Oliver Zanetti will draw on research undertaken on a two year project, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and based at The Open University, called Smart Cities in the Making: Learning from Milton Keynes. 
Prof Gillian Rose’s interest is in the way that smart cities of the future are imagined and visualised. The emergence of the smart city is offering new visions of future urban life, its buildings, inhabitants, infrastructures, governance and even its ‘feel’, using computer generated imagery. A lot of work goes into those visionings, from corporations who want to sell smart city tech, to city councils who want to show how it improves city life. But, she asks, what kind of futures do those visuals help us to imagine, and what are they making harder to see?
Prof Sophie Watson’s work concerns the way social, cultural, ethnic and gendered differences affect how people engage with smart technologies. Her research looks at the home visits by water companies as smart water meters were being introduced. The research exposes the fact that the hope for behaviour change driven simply by technology was misplaced. In fact the response from water users is much more nuanced, connecting perceptions of private and public space, the relationship between the user and the water provider, and social difference too.
Dr Oliver Zanetti’s research examines how citizens engage with smart and digital technologies. He has worked with visually impaired people who use smart technology to help them navigate urban spaces, and has followed the story of two campaigns to develop new technologies for navigation. He is interested in what this tells us about the idea of the smart citizen, and his research asks to what extent urban citizens are able to influence the development of the smart city in the places they live.
