<h3>Artist Elke Finkenauer, co-founder of Sculpture Placement Group and artist Kate V Robertson, and Director Of Glasgow Sculpture Studios, Mhairi Sawyer, invite you to join them in a discussion around how material practice is evolving.</h3>Following the isolation and limitations imposed during the Covid pandemic, we are now all navigating the uncertainties of a cost of living crisis with rising costs and financial uncertainties. At the same time, many artists and makers are considering the environmental sustainability of their material practice. This discussion will focus on how artists and makers are responding to these challenges, what they are considering in their creative processes and material choices. Are artists re-evaluating their practice and doing things differently? How are skills evolving? What facilities and services could be developed to support future, sustainable practice?
 
Elke Finkenauer
Elke is a visual artist working across sculpture, drawing, text and digital mediums. She improvises with material and process as a way of thinking through incongruities within social and professional structures and the ways people navigate them. Elke has an MFA from Glasgow School of Art. In 2022 she was a recipient of awards from the Glasgow VACMA Bursary, and Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for Individuals, and exhibited with Creative Informatics: Creative Horizons at Inspace Gallery, Edinburgh. https://www.elkefinkenauer.com/ 

Kate V Robertson, Sculpture Placement Group (SPG)
Kate is an artist and co-founder of SPG which is primarily a research organisation that advocates for more sustainable practises in the arts and improves the economic conditions of artists; piloting new models for commissioning, collecting and engaging with sculpture, implementing sustainable practices within the arts through tools like CAN and working in contexts and communities where sculpture isn’t as present. https://www.sculptureplacementgroup.org.uk/

Mhairi Sawyer, Glasgow Sculpture Studios (GSS)
Mhairi has been director of GSS for 6 years. GSS is one of the largest 3d art production facilities in the UK, with specialist workshops in metalwork, woodwork, plaster, resin/spray, ceramics and digital fabrication, also providing studios for artists working in these media and more, exploring what sculpture means today. https://www.glasgowsculpturestudios.org/
