From the Saxons to the present day, Walworth has had many incarnations. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, for centuries Walworth remained a village, famous for its peaches and gardens. But by 1820 the open fields were disappearing, and streets of houses were springing up in their place.The change, at first gradual, became rapid.By 1860 Walworth was one of the most populous areas of London, and later that century it was an area known for overcrowding and poverty, and the place where Charlie Chaplin was born.Walworth has belonged to a court jester, temporarily housed St Thomas’ Hospital, seen the first giraffes in a public collection in the United Kingdom, been the force behind achieving age related pensions, and has been mentioned in literature from Charles Dickens to Michèle Roberts via Muriel Spark.The walk lasts around two hours and will end at a collection of artists studios which open to the public this weekend.
