Online roundtable for the comics community on how we take the recommendations of the UK Comics Creators Research Report and make them stick
It's a well-understood truth that this precarious and informal industry, largely run on the enthusiasm of its participants, often requires corners to be cut in order to function. Corners which, inevitably, come at a price to someone.
For this second online discussion event we will be tucking into the meaty subject of COMICS LIVELIHOODS: which sources are we earning our income from? What does fair pay mean? What is the value of intellectual property? Does art have to be commodified in order to exist? What is the difference between a career and a hobby, or - god help us - a “side hustle”?
This event is open to all those working in and with comics in the UK: creators, community groups, event organisers, publishers, retailers, educators, librarians, academics and industry bodies, irrespective of career stage or time served.
Following a very brief recap of the relevant bits of the UK Comics Creators Research Report, there will be a series of breakout rooms to explore what the findings mean, and how we can help shape the report’s recommendations to funders, policymakers and industry bodies.
