Titanic and Regulatory Evolution

The Southern Joint Branch is comprised of members of both the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology and runs a diverse programme of lectures and social events.Our social programme begins with our President’s Drinks Reception in May, which is an informal networking event for the South’s maritime community and ends with our black tie Annual Dinner in November. Our technical programme runs a number of technical lectures throughout the year on a wide variety of topics which are open to both members and non-members.

RINA & IMarEST Southern Joint Branch

The  maritime regulatory framework has evolved  since  the Titanic - this lecture explores the effect of modern regulations on her design.

<p>With the international regulatory framework regarding damaged stability and survivability having evolved significantly since Titanic’s foundering in the early 1900s, this academic study explores the effects modern damage regulations in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 would have on Titanic’s design. The lecture considers how any design changes required to attain compliance may have influenced Titanic’s foundering and from this indicates how international safety standards have improved.</p>

<p>Andy has worked at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency since 2014 in a variety of roles related to marine technology and currently works in its International team representing the UK at the International Maritime Organization. Having followed the development of the ‘2020 SOLAS’ damage regulations, and like many in the maritime community, has had interest in research surrounding Titanic’s foundering and how this initiated the first SOLAS Convention. These interests lead to Andy’s MSc thesis topic which forms this presentation concluding his studies at Newcastle University in 2020.</p>
