The &#x27;Todo Villa&#x27; project presents the complete published work of Villa-Lobos for solo guitar from the perspective of three internationally renowned Brazilian guitarists from three generations, all of them alumni from the Royal Academy of Music: Fabio Zanon, Fabricio Mattos, and Plínio Fernandes. The programme follows a non-linear aesthetic through time jumps and variations within the performance space, thus enabling a clearer appreciation of the composer’s versatile style. Tonight’s concert provides a rare opportunity not only for guitar and Villa-Lobos aficionados, but also for admirers of the incomparable beauty of Brazilian music.THE COMPOSERDescribed by Grove Dictionary as &quot;the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music”, Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) revolutionised the classical and Brazilian music worlds, and continues to be Brazil’s most internationally recognised composer.Breathtakingly productive until his death, Villa-Lobos echoed in his music the dramatic changes Brazil underwent in his lifetime: the abolition of slavery; the breakneck growth of cities; acute political turbulence; the colossal enterprise of building the new capital, Brasília. Inspired by his travels around the country as a young troubadour, Villa-Lobos embraced the complexity of Brazilian culture from a cosmopolitan perspective, combining European classical tradition with modern techniques and diverse, underrepresented musical expressions from Brazil.THE MUSICIANSAn international household name in guitar music, FABIO ZANON has played over forty concerto pieces, in over fifty countries and venues such as Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall (London), Philharmonie (Berlin), Carnegie Hall (New York), Tchaikovsky Hall (Moscow), Philharmonie (St Petersburg), and Sala Verdi (Milan). A past winner of major international competitions, like the GFA Competition in the USA, the Francisco Tarrega in Spain, and Alessandria in Italy, Fabio Zanon’s interpretations earn worldwide admiration for their combination of integrity, imagination and a cultivated tone. In addition to a concert guitarist, Zanon is also a conductor, author, broadcaster and professor. He has written a book about Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos and has written and presented the radio shows The Art of Guitar and The Brazilian Guitar for Radio Cultura in Brazil, as well as the music podcast Lira. Fabio is a Fellow and a Visiting Professor at Royal Academy of Music in London and the artistic manager at the Campos do Jordão Winter Festival in Brazil. Founder of the innovative WGC - Worldwide Guitar Connections, FABRICIO MATTOS is a musician deeply committed to finding new paths for musical performance in the 21st century. Regularly performing around the world and premiering dozens of works for guitar, Mattos has toured in five continents just over the last few years and has earned numerous awards including the prestigious Julian Bream Prize, awarded by the eponymous legendary British guitarist. Fabricio Mattos is currently a PhD candidate at the Royal Academy of Music, and co-founder of the New Stages Creations, working regularly as creative director of live performances and bespoke video projects commissioned by a wide variety of ensembles and institutions.From São Paulo, Brazil, young classical guitarist PLÍNIO FERNANDES takes his inspiration from a long line of greats - Antônio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Jacob do Bandolim, Violeta Parra, Edu Lobo, Cartola and Laurindo Almeida - the guitar being so central to the Brazilian folk tradition. Six years of studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London have added to that cannon, opening up a whole world of Western Classical Music to his repertoire. Recently signed to Decca Records, New York, his debut album will feature duets with Braimah Kanneh-Mason and legendary Brazilian artist María Rita. Fernandes will also reunite with long-time collaborator Sheku Kanneh-Mason after Fernandes appeared on Sheku’s acclaimed 2020 album Elgar for their duet of ‘Scarborough Fair’ which has since featured on the BBC’s Imagine documentary ‘This House is a full of Music’.
