TOTOMOXTLE: A conversation with Fernando Laposse, Delfino Martínez and Nicolás Reyes

The Embassy of Mexico in the United Kingdom is delighted to host designer based in London Fernando Laposse and Delfino Martínez and Nicolás Reyes, farmers from Tonahuixtla, Puebla, to give an overview about the Totomoxtle project.Totomoxtle is a new material that harnesses the brilliant spectrum of colour seen in the husks of heirloom corn. Ranging from deep purples, to soft creams, Totomoxtle showcases the range of species of native corn that exist in Mexico. Each husk is carefully cut and peeled off the cob, ironed flat and glued onto a paper pulp or textile backing. At this point the material is ready to be cut by hand or laser into small pieces that are reassembled to make marquetry for furniture or interior surfaces.This project goes far beyond simply aesthetics. Totomoxtle focuses also on regenerating traditional agricultural practices in Mexico, providing income for impoverished farmers and conserving biodiversity for future food security. Totomoxtle was recently showcased at the World Economic Forum in Davos and has been exhibited at the V&A, the London Design Museum, the Triennale di Milano and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.Don’t miss the chance to see firsthand the protagonists of this exciting project which intersects with sustainable design and social responsibility.*Delfino and Nicolás will speak in Spanish.
