Overview

Hand massage is an effective technique for providing comfort and touch in a non-threatening, non-invasive manner to soothe and calm patients

This course is designed to provide healthcare professionals and non-registered staff with the skills and knowledge to provide a simple hand massage. This course includes a practical element.

This three-hour session will cover the following:

A theoretical component covering

  • Touch – what it is and why it is important
  • How and when to use it
  • When not to use it, precautions and contraindications
  • Oils and lotions

A practical component

  • Learning a simple hand massage routine

"Touch provides many benefits for the dying and the one doing the touching. Touch increases levels of the hormone oxytocin which in turn lowers stress hormone levels in infants and across the life span. For the elderly and dying, touch has been found to promote sleep, and decrease blood pressure and heart rate."
